The
History of the Sheil Catholic Center
The
First 50 Years
When the Sheil
Catholic Center celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1989, a group
of talented and dedicated associates researched and wrote
a history of the first 50 years. We are reprinting that history
here.
Social Service
Continuing a Sheil
tradition of community service, a group of volunteers went
weekly in the early '80s to help serve meals at soup kitchens
in a number of Chicago parishes. By the mid-'80s the homeless
had made their presence felt in Evanston, where they found
help in the form of food and shelter provided them at the
First Baptist Church by local volunteers. Led by Ann O'Connor,
Steve Gravelle and George Shelton, Sheil members joined this
effort by taking over the preparation and serving of Sunday
supper there each week. Since 1985 nearly 100 Sheilites, mainly
graduate students and associates, have contributed to this
effort.
Many Sheil undergrads
have participated in the annual Northwestern Dance Marathon,
where representatives from campus living units or organizations
gather sponsors' pledges for the time they log rocking around
the clock at Norris University Center. The proceeds go to
various charities. In the winter of 1983 Sheil's team, Betsey
Maier and Alan Clark, raised more than $3,500 for the Easter
Seals Association, the second largest sum raised in the marathon
that year.
