Alternative Break Trips 2007-2008

Service Trips are a great opportunity to put your faith into action by serving underprivileged people around the world. It is also a chance to learn about another culture, to grow in your personal faith journey, to understand and integrate the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, and to share what you have learned with the Sheil community.

We invite you to prayerfully consider giving part of your Break to helping and learning about the people of Nicaragua and New Orleans. The Sheil Service Trips to Nicaragua and New Orleans are open to all Northwestern undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.

New Orleans Trip

In the devastating wake of Hurricane Katrina, Catholic Charities has had over ten thousand college students help in the process of rebuilding people's homes. The people of New Orleans continue to need the commitment of the Catholic Church for the welfare of the poor and needy. Sheil has had four successful trips to New Orleans helping twenty home owners begin the process of rebuilding. Residents have remarked that having us there has been a sign of 'Hope' for them.

International Trip to Nicaragua

For our international trip to Nicaragua we are collaborating with the Fabretto Children's Foundation. Our primary work will be to help with ongoing construction projects at the Fabretto center in Cusmapa. We may also spend time with the Forestry Program planting trees and assisting in the carpentry shop. Most afternoons will be spent playing games with the children and participating in the various music and sports programs. Evenings will be reserved for prayer and reflection, group social time and rest. At the beginning of the trip, the group will participate in cultural activities and sight seeing to appreciate the great history and natural beauty of Nicaragua. Options may include a volcano tour, shopping in the historic Masaya market, and a boat ride on Lake Nicaragua.

Student-Led Alternative Spring Break Trip

Sheil's student-led trip is organized and implemented by students. Last year, the students worked with Habitat for Humanity in New Belen, Mexico. The students schedule included morning prayer, full work day, evening reflection using Catholic Social Teaching, and social time visiting and learning about Native American and Hispanic culture, attending Mass, hiking, attending a rodeo, etc. This years trip again will be planned by students and the destination and work will be part of the planning process. All student input is welcome.
