Liturgical Commission
Anyone who is interested in actively participating in Mass
is invited to volunteer and take part in whichever way they
feel most comfortable. Please contact Angela Stramaglia, Director
of Liturgical Music and Ministry, at 847-328-4648 ext. 20
or email a-stramaglia@northwestern.edu
for more information.
The
Liturgical Commission is a body of Sheil members, both student
and associate, that represents the many ministries involved
in liturgical planning. This body of representatives reviews
liturgical policies, plans seasons, and supports ministers
that serve the Sheil community in the preparation of daily,
weekly, and special liturgies.
Any general questions
regarding liturgy at Sheil should be directed towards Director
of Liturgical Music and Ministries, Angela Stramaglia.
Members of the
Liturgical Commission beginning Spring 2007:
Ad Hoc Members
of the Assembly (Megan
Sugrue)
These individuals represent the Ministers of the Assembly
on the Liturgical Commission.
Bread Baking
Ministry (Angela
Stramaglia )
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal tells us
that even though unleavened and baked, the Eucharistic bread
used at celebration should truly have the appearance of food,
therefore, we use what is commonly referred to as substantial
bread at Sheil. The bread we receive each week is the work
of our assembly's hands. Anyone who can follow a recipe is
invited to participate in this ministry. Students without
available kitchens, are welcome to use the facilities at Sheil.
Bilingual Liturgies
(Angela Stramaglia
)
ThSheil offers a bilingual liturgy (English/Spanish) once
a month at the 5:00 pm Mass. Please check the monthly calendar
for exact dates. Anyone interested in helping to plan the
liturgy or offer translation help is invited to join us.
Children's Liturgy
of the Word (CLOW) (Paula
Allotta )
The Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered during the 9:30
a.m. liturgy. These ministers use the Lectionary for Children
to proclaim the Word, and share Christ's message with the
youngest members of our community. The scriptures and their
meaning are shared in language specifically chosen for a child's
comprehension. Student facilitators, parent helpers, as well
as musicians are needed.
Environment
(Angela
Stramaglia)
The flowers, banners, symbols and arrangements are important
parts of our liturgical space and can add or detract from
our worship experience. All those artistically inclined and
interested in working with our environment are encouraged
to participate.
Eucharistic
Ministers (Kim
Brightmore)
Distributing the consecrated bread and wine at liturgy is
an integral part of who we are as community. Through this
sharing of elements we not only acknowledge, but we become
the presence of Christ for one another as the Body and the
Blood. Attendance at a training workshop is mandatory for
those that wish to participate in this ministry.
Greeters and
Ushers
Greeters and Ushers are the first ministers of hospitality.
By welcoming the assembly, distributing worship aids and bulletins,
and assisting in seating, they welcome all to our community
of liturgical prayer. All assembled are responsible for the
act of hospitality, but the usher is specifically assigned
the responsibility of guiding the way by example.
Music Ministry
(Angela Stramaglia)
Music Ministry (choir, cantors and instrumentalists) assists
the assembly in its sung prayer at all of our Sunday liturgies.
Although no past experience is required, some sense of musicianship
is necessary in order to support the community in this task.
Flexibility is the rule; offer your gifts when and where your
schedule permits. A mandatory rehearsal for the individual
ensembles takes place an hour and fifteen minutes before each
mass on Sunday. Check out our brochure
for a description of how you can get involved.
RCIA
(Mary Deeley)
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is an opportunity for
all interested to journey in faith with those moving toward
Baptism, reception into the Catholic Church, and Confirmation.
Sponsors, catechists, and student companions are needed to
participate and represent the entire community in this most
vital and deeply rewarding ministry.
Readers
(Ed Mellinger)
Readers are our storytellers, proclaiming the Word of God
and drawing us, as community, into the scriptures. Attendance
at a training workshop is mandatory for those that wish to
participate in this ministry.
Sacristans
(Tony Jarboe)
Sacristans are responsible for the care and condition of the
liturgical space as well as the elements used for each celebration
of the Eucharist. They oversee the liturgy as a whole by ensuring
that all other ministers are prepared to begin, and that the
worship proceeds smoothly.
Writing Ministry
(Sarah
Ponte)
This group reflects on the needs of the community and the
world and expresses those needs in the writing of the General
Intercessions, and the spiritual reflections offered in Sheil's
weekly bulletin. Those who serve in the writing ministry also
prepare information and educational pieces on aspects of the
liturgy and liturgical seasons.
Steering Council
Representatives
( Krystyna Kowalik)
These individuals represent Liturgical Commission on the Steering
Council and vice-versa.
