Becoming
Catholic
If you are
exploring the possibility of becoming a Roman Catholic, Sheil
can help your discernment with two options.
Most people
choose to join the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for
Adults), a series of classes beginning in October and ending
in May. The first several classes constitute the Inquiry period
- a chance to explore the Catholic Christian faith with others.
Those who choose to go on toward baptism and/or confirmation
then participate in the Rite of Election and continue their
study as catechumens or candidates preparing for the sacraments
which are received at the Easter Vigil service. A short post
- sacramental period of mystagogy (continued study) in the
faith follows the celebration of Easter. RCIA was originally
designed for those who were not baptized in any Christian
denomination and has gradually incorporated those who wish
to be received from other denominations.
If you have
been baptized and catechized in another Christian denomination
you may speak to a Sheil staff member about being received
into the church after a period of private instruction or after
the inquiry period of RCIA. Normally, those who are received
into the church at a time other than Easter will participate
in adult confirmation in the
spring.
